Part 4.2 – Twitter Marketing Etiquette

Pay attention to Twitter!  With approximately 5 million users and growing fast, Twitter is becoming a powerful media force.

Here’s a crash cultural course and a few mechanics to get started with Twitter.  Unlike other well known social media sites, it’s okay to follow folks you don’t know.  If you find someone interesting by browsing or searching, just follow them to receive their Tweets.  Many will reciprocate by following you back.

Follow Me

I started out by registering and following a friend with an established account.  I knew we were interested in similar subjects.  So I “followed” some of his “followers” and people he was “following”.  Boom!  It’s that easy.

It won’t take long before you notice that different people tweet in different ways. Some people actually have an explicit conversation.  Others monitor current events or topics of interest.   There are passive users, who just listen, and active users who contribute to the dialogue.  Some people promote their business with spammy shameless plugs, while others weave a marketing message into a natural conversation.  (I recommend the latter as a useful tactic.)

@Replies

Join into conversations about topics relating to your business using the @Reply feature.  @Replies are like an ordinary tweet, but they also alert the recipient that you are directing a public comment towards them.  A series of @Replies back and forth becomes a conversation.

Direct Messages

You can also use the Direct Message (”DM”) feature to send a private message.  Use DM’s to individualize a business relationship and eventually migrate the conversation to the telephone or a face-to-face meeting.

Think of the marketing power -  a new era marketer creating new relationships based on targeted relevance – not just dialing for dollars.
